Few British geographers appeared during the expansion of the British Empire in the late 18th century, and little of significance was produced. Some cartographic progress was apparent, but even here the French and Americans surpassed the English. Surveys the leading colonial mapmakers. War in 1754 and 1775 spurred cartographic activity, but after the 1770's there remained little American talent in this field. Primary and secondary sources; 82 notes.
