An obituary of French historian and linguist Gilbert Chinard (1881-1972). After receiving an education at several French schools, Chinard journeyed to the United States, where he studied several personages of the American Revolutionary period and the Huguenots in America. Chinard opposed the Vichy government throughout World War II. He retired from active teaching in 1950 and devoted the remainder of his lifetime to research activities.
