The Case of 'A Late Student': Pictorial Satire in Jacksonian America.

Reviews the uses of political satire in cartoons during Andrew Jackson's administrations. Curiously, nearly all of the cartoons came from Jackson's opponents, who claimed that Jacksonians did not have enough sense to understand them and therefore did not respond. Jackson's supporters were able to create a superhuman image by embellishing actual facts. They had neither patience with, nor use for, sophisticated and mythical arguments. 2 photos, 29 notes.
