Reprints a letter written by Ellen Randolph Coolidge in 1858 to her husband concerning the personal life of her grandfather, Thomas Jefferson, and countering certain allegations made against his character, particularly the story initially circulated by journalist James Thomson Callender, that Jefferson had fathered children by one of his slaves, Sally Hemings.
