Henry Joel Cadbury (1913-74) received his Ph.D. from Harvard University, taught at several preparatory schools and universities, and acquired emeritus rank at Harvard. His research specialties were Quaker and biblical history, and he authored several books on these subjects. Cadbury founded the American Friends Service Committee in 1917, serving two terms as its chairman. He received the Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of the Committee in 1947.
