James Phinney Baxter 3rd.

James Phinney Baxter, 3d. (1893-1975) was born in Portland, Maine, and educated at Williams College and at Harvard University (where he joined the faculty after graduation). He was always interested in national defense; he served in several civilian military capacities during World War II. A fine historian, he was a charter member of the American Antiquarian Society. Among his publications were 'Scientists Against Time,' which chronicled the efforts of scientists and technologists in the war effort and won the Pulitzer Prize in 1947. His presence, fine mind, and unfailing good humor will be sorely missed.
