Edward Chase Kirkland (1894-1975) was born in Vermont and educated at Dartmouth College and Harvard University. He served in the Army during World War I, then taught at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Brown University. He developed an abiding hatred of war. He chose to specialize in American economic history. He published a number of important books and articles, and served in several historical societies. He was elected to the American Antiquarian Society in 1948, and took an active role. He remained an inveterate Yankee; his favorite time in history was the period in which old New England flowered, before rising technology snuffed it out.
