Frederick Barnes Tolles.

A remembrance of Frederick Barnes Tolles (1915-75). Tolles was born in New Hampshire. He was educated at Harvard University, where he converted from Unitarianism to Quakerism, a decision that was to alter his entire life. He began teaching at Swarthmore College, a Quaker institution, and refused induction in World War II as a conscientious objector, doing alternative work instead. His primary academic thrust was in the direction of the history of Quakerism in the American society and he published a number of books on the subject. Tolles was elected to membership in the American Antiquarian Society in 1967. He was proud of the honor, but distance and poor health prevented him from taking an active part in the Society's activities.
