The printers and booksellers of London influenced British responses to the colonial crisis in North America by the way they presented the events of those years. This article surveys pamphlets, emphasizing their external history instead of their textual content. The focus is on the factors that determined publication and distribution and a summary narrative of how those factors developed in the instance of a few notable pamphlets. More than 1,400 publications relating to America appeared between 1764 and 1783, providing the people of Great Britain with an unprecedented volume of information about America and its people.
