Crossing the Cultural Divide: Indians and New Englanders, 1605-1763.

Challenges previous assumptions that an Indianization of whites occurred rather than the Europeanization of Indians. Surveys groups of Indians that did undergo transculturation and the obstacles to their social and religious conversion. Most New Englanders did not fully accept Indians who changed their allegiance. Whites who defected to the Indians were usually marginal figures in colonial society. Few Indians and fewer colonists crossed the cultural divide. Based on captivity narratives and 17th-century printed works; 4 illus., 10 tables, 154 notes, 2 appendixes.
