Oliver Wendell Holmes.

Outlines the career of Holmes, an encyclopedist, historian, and archivist - and no relation to the poet or jurist similarly named. His chief research focus was a study of the stagecoach, and most of his career was spent at the National Archives in a variety of administrative positions. From 1961 to 1972 he was executive director of the National Historical Publications Commission and was responsible for initiating many significant documentary projects.
