'A Profound Though Special Erudition': Justin Winsor As Historian of Discovery.

Chronicles Winsor's achievements as a historian of discovery. During the last 20 years of his life Winsor produced a considerable volume of historico-geographical scholarship. He published bibliographical guides, coordinated a multivolume 'Memorial History of Boston,' and wrote the eight-volume 'Narrative and Critical History of America.' Surveys his other work in historical geography, cartography, and as a chronicler of discovery in several additional volumes published during the last six years of his life. The popularity of his ideas did not persist, and Frederick Jackson Turner's work became predominant.
