Surveys the technology of the printing industry, and its impact on bookmaking. Mechanization in the 19th century replaced crafts practices and led to a decline in workmanship. The industrial printer became more of a merchant; production speed replaced design as a goal for book printing. In the early 20th century a reaction set in, and new typesetting machines and photolitho offset became dominant.
