The Case of the Missing Phylactery.

Examines theories supporting the Hebraic origin of American Indians, and discusses a Jewish phylactery (a leather strap containing verses from the Bible) excavated at Pittsfield, Massachusetts, in 1815. Writers at that time believed the phylactery had been brought from Assyria by the Indians' ancestors, and it became a focal point for the Lost Tribes theory, before it disappeared.
