Cooper, Lafayette, and the French National Budget: A Postscript.

Introduces and reprints two letters by James Fenimore Cooper to the editor of the French newspaper 'Le National'. At the request of his friend, the Marquis de Lafayette, Cooper agreed in 1831 to publish an analysis of the cost of government in the United States. Lafayette sought to attack the view of French royalists that government in a republic was more costly than in any other kind of state, and he used Cooper's pamphlet in the French budget debate of 1832.
