The Remonds of Salem, Massachusetts: A Nineteenth-Century Family Revisited.

Surveys John Remond's life in Salem, Massachusetts as representative of the experiences of free black people in early 19th-century New England. Remond became a barber and caterer, and by 1807 had also developed extensive commercial ventures. These continued to expand through the 1840's, when ill health forced him to turn his business over to his children. Summarizes the lives of some of these children, especially Charles Lenox Remond and Sarah Parker Remond. Both were active in abolitionist causes.
