Publishing in America: Needs and Opportunities for Research.

Examines the history and impact of publishing in the United States through 1876 and discusses major research needs and opportunities to advance the study of the book in American culture. Relations among publishers, the role of patronage, publishing as a business enterprise, and the question of censorship are a few of the areas that need further examination. The two greatest needs are in the identification of primary sources for publishing history and the preparation of a bibliography of the American book trades.
