The premier biographer of Thomas Jefferson, Dumas Malone (1892-1986) rose from a rural Georgia background to earn a Yale Ph.D. He served as editor of the 'Dictionary of American Biography' and published numerous volumes in addition to his six-volume biography, 'Jefferson and His Times.'
