Charles Harris Wesley was the third black man to be awarded a Ph.D. in history from Harvard University, and he spent most of his life near colleges and universities. He was also an ordained minister and authored a biography of Richard Allen. A joiner of numerous organizations, Wesley also wrote histories of various benevolent societies and fraternities. In academic circles, Wesley spent much of his time laboring to promote Afro-American history in schools, colleges, and in print. He died in 1987.
