A Social Portrait of the South at the Turn of the Eighteenth Century.

Surveys the settlement of lands throughout the South in the late 18th century. Northern officers from the Continental Army who married the daughters of wealthy Southerners, and prominent Southerners who purchased southwestern lands, led these settlement efforts. Land speculators and planters were joined by an invading force of Northern ministers and teachers after 1800 who aimed at transforming Southern frontier society.
