The first American wood engraver, Alexander Anderson, left an extensive diary for the years 1792-99 that provides rich detail about his life as a young man, the New York City book trade, and the social history of New York City in the 1790's. Focuses on his work as an engraver, and provides an annotated checklist of his known engravings. The diary also discussed various technical processes and engraving techniques, and a short explanation of those techniques is appended.
