Three Hundred Years of the American Newspaper.

Introduces the scholarship from a symposium held by the American Antiquarian Society in the fall of 1990 to observe the 300th anniversary of the publication of the first American newspaper, 'Publick Occurrences Both Forreign and Domestick.' Several themes emerged, including the role of newspapers in setting agendas and defining community, and the tension between the role of public watchdog and a for-profit business enterprise.
