Examines the establishment and subsequent growth of newspapers in the British American colonies, within the context of the metropolitan papers on which they were modeled. The 1720's-30's was a period of experimentation that led to great variety, but by the 1740's American newspaper publishing had largely become standardized and mature. The multiplication of newspapers by 1740 led to a much more broadly informed public, since all of the mainland colonies were by then within reach of at least one newspaper.
