Newspapers and American Nationhood, 1776-1826.

During the early national period, American newspapers were fiercely partisan, representing and exacerbating '"all' the lines of cleavage in the early republic." But through their representation of faction and sedition, newspapers helped build American nationhood. They standardized political language and thereby fostered both nationalism and pluralism. In so doing they made dialogue possible.
