Lawrence William Towner.

Presents an obituary of Lawrence Towner (1921-92), president and librarian of the Newberry Library. A graduate of Cornell College, he served in World War II. After the war he studied under Ray Allen Billington at Northwestern University. He then edited the 'William & Mary Quarterly,' and in 1962 became director and librarian at the Newberry Library, which he led on an ambitious expansion program. He retired in 1986 at age 65.
