News at the Hearth: A Drama of Reading in Nineteenth-Century America.

Surveys 19th-century newspaper-reading in domestic settings, particularly its iconography. That iconography portrayed it as a male privilege, but often missed the challenge of women to that patriarchy. Newspaper-reading also tended to be an individual act, and cut people off from others in the same room. Appended is a chronological list of pictures of newspaper-reading in domestic settings.
