Frenchmen Into Peasants: Modernity and Tradition in the Peopling of French North America.

French immigrants to Canada came chiefly from urban and modern parts of France, yet they founded a rural, Catholic, hierarchical society. Based on a sample of 16,000 persons, the author explores the demographics of that early settlement. Immigration was linked to urbanization and was segregated by sex, with men outnumbering women among the migrants.
