Douglas Wallace Bryant (1913-94) directed the Harvard University Library system during its years of growth and technical development. A graduate of Stanford and the University of Michigan, he spent his career at the William L. Clements Library, the Detroit Public Library, the University of California at Berkeley, and the American Embassy in London before joining the Harvard Library staff in 1952. He helped conceive the 'National Union Catalog,' and became a leader in the Research Libraries Group.
