Shelby Cullom Davis.

Shelby Cullom Davis (1909-94) supported historical teaching and research in the United States. After earning a Ph.D. in 1934 from the University of Geneva, he published several books while serving as an economist in the private sector and as an adviser to Thomas Dewey. He served on various government boards during World War II, and in 1944 founded an investment banking firm, Shelby Cullom Davis & Company. He became an educational philanthropist, endowing the Shelby Cullom Davis Center at Princeton University as well as chairs in the history department.
