Jeremiah Kaplan.

Jeremiah Kaplan (1926-93) was a major figure in the world of publishing. He spent his early years as an active member of the Young Peoples Socialist League, later joining the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). He entered publishing at the age of 21 and named his firm the Free Press. His company focused on reprinting classic sociological texts. In 1960 he sold the Free Press to Macmillan but remained active in the firm until 1986. At the American Antiquarian Society he played an active role in the History of the Book in American Culture program and endowed a fund to support acquisitions and cataloging.
