Dublin bookseller Patrick Byrne began a lengthy business relationship with Mathew Carey of Philadelphia (originally from Dublin) in 1788. Their relationship provides insight into the Irish book export trade in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Carey became the leading bookseller and publisher in the United States although his trade with Patrick Byrne involved problems of transportation, customs, payment, and distribution. Both men became wealthy through this trade despite these problems.
