John Edward Sawyer.

John Edward Sawyer (1917-95), former president of Williams College and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, was a staunch supporter of a liberal arts education and a pioneer in philanthropy. He graduated from both Williams and Harvard, and taught at both Harvard and Yale before becoming president of Williams in 1961. Retiring in 1973, he served as vice-president of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for one year before becoming its president.
