John Sloan's Newspaper Career: An Alternative to Art School.

The Philadelphia Inquirer and the Press employed John Sloan as a newspaper artist for their editorial and advertising pages from 1892 until 1903 Sloan's illustrations exhibit his creative experimentation with styles, subjects, and color for journalistic assignments. With the skills he had acquired, he moved to New York City when he finally left the newspaper business to work as a magazine illustrator and teacher and to develop his painting and etching.
