The Sacred Roll, a Shaker 'scripture' published in 1843, reflects the religious culture of the United Society of Believers during the Era of Manifestations as well as the personal fortunes of its author, Philemon Stewart. It gives voice to the Society's claims concerning its founder, Ann Lee, and her association with the Second Coming of Christ in opposition to the views of adventists led by William Miller. This essay describes the origins, publication, distribution, and reception of this Shaker 'bible.'
