Wilcomb Edward Washburn.

Historian Wilcomb Washburn (1925-97) had a long, active, and often controversial career in a wide range of national and international organizations. His base for almost forty years was the Smithsonian Institution, where he directed the program in American studies. He was also a prolific scholar, and a pioneer in the study of Indian-white relations.
