Frank Thomas Siebert, Jr.

Frank Siebert (1912-98) dedicated much of his life to the study and preservation of the Penobscot Indians' language and culture. Siebert's interest in Native American culture began in the 1930's, when he dedicated his summers to recording rapidly disappearing Native American vocabularies. During medical school at the University of Pennsylvania, Siebert attended linguistics classes at nearby universities and continued to develop his collection of Native American dictionaries and reference books. Siebert did field work and contributed a number of reviews from the 1940's to the early 1960's while practicing medicine. In 1968 he moved to Old Town, Maine, the center of the Penobscot Nation, and devoted his time to working on a Penobscot dictionary. He was inducted into the American Antiquarian Society in 1986.
