Comer Vann Woodward.

C. Vann Woodward (1908-99) was Sterling professor emeritus of history at Yale University. He came to Yale in the early 1960's from Johns Hopkins. He served as president of all three major American organizations of historians. Woodward wrote on the post-Reconstruction South, with his most influential work being 'The Strange Career of Jim Crow' (1955). In 1976 he was elected a member of the American Antiquarian Society.
