Members of the Ward family of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, employed a variety of techniques--genealogies, biographies, paintings, mausoleums, and even statues--to memorialize their distinguished ancestor, General Artemas Ward. For over a century after his death in 1800, Ward's descendants used his life and accomplishments in the complex creation of family, local, and ultimately national identity. The Wards are a unique and provocative ease study in the uses of historical memory.
