John Higham.

Contains an obituary of John Higham (1920-2003), who earned his bachelor's degree in history at Johns Hopkins University in 1941 and, after serving in the air force during World War II, earned his PhD in US history at the University of Wisconsin. He taught at the University of California, Los Angeles; Rutgers University; Columbia University; the University of Michigan; and, finally, Johns Hopkins. Higham's work focused on US immigration history and nativism, cultural history, and historiography. He published two monographs, 'Strangers in the Land: Patterns of American Nativism, 1860-1925' (1955) and 'History: Professional Scholarship in America' (1965), in addition to essays, articles, and reviews.
