Presents an obituary for Betsy Beinecke Shirley (1919-2004), daughter of Walter Beinecke, who, along with his brothers, planned and funded the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University. Beginning in 1970, Shirley amassed an impressive collection of American children's literature and a variety of manuscripts, letters, illustrations, wills, and chapbooks related to early American children and childhood.
