Charles H. Sawyer.

Presents an obituary for art historian and museum director Charles Sawyer (1906-2005), who attended Phillips Academy and graduated from Yale University in 1929. In 1930 he became curator and later director of the Addison Gallery of American Art at Phillips Academy. He was also director of the Division of the Arts at Yale and the Worcester Museum of Art in Massachusetts. In 1957 he became the second director of the University of Michigan Museum of Art and a member of the faculty. At Michigan he established a program in museum practice to train students. The university recognized him with the creation of the Charles Sawyer Center for Museum Studies. He retired in 1972 and went on to serve on the Smithsonian Art Commission until 1982.
