Alvin M. Josephy, Jr.

Presents an obituary for Alvin M. Josephy, Jr., (1915-2005), who worked as a screenwriter, newspaper reporter for the 'New York Herald Tribune,' and news director at radio station WOR before working for the Office of War Information and then joining the Marine Corps as a combat correspondent during World War II. He received the Bronze Star for his work in Guam. After the war he became a foreign correspondent, an associate editor of 'Time,' and vice president and editor in chief of American Heritage Publications. Josephy authored more than a dozen books, many on the history of American Indians, and played an active role in supporting American Indians in their efforts for self-determination, treaty rights, and sovereignty. The recipient of many awards, he was elected a member of the American Antiquarian Society in October 1977 and served as president of the Western History Association in 1993 and 1994 and on the boards of several organizations.
