Closing the Last Chapter of the Atlantic Revolution: The 1837-38 Rebellions in Upper and Lower Canada.

The Canada Act was intended to stop the dissemination of republican principles through the creation of Upper Canada (now Ontario) and Lower Canada (now Quebec). By 1828, reformers rediscovering republican discourse questioned the legitimacy and the organization of the political structure a process that corresponded to the criteria of the Atlantic Revolution. The unrest, culminating the 1837-38 rebellions in both colonies, must be considered as the last chapter of the Atlantic Revolution, one that did not end happily for Canadian republicans.
