The Republican Interpretation: Retrospect and Prospect.

Republicanism and liberalism were mixed, not separate, in 18th-century discourse, but much postwar scholarship has treated them as competing themes. The republican synthesis is very much the creation of historians rather than an accurate reading of the primary sources. Revolutionary thought was a blend of liberal and neoclassical ideas, and a reconsideration of how these two strains have mixed and interacted is necessary.
