The Lithographic Workshop, 1825-50.

For a quarter of a century, the new medium of lithography, as practiced in workshops, produced a vast quantity of pictorial images for many uses. The need for skilled draughtsmen capable of tonal work led these workshops established in the cities along the eastern seaboard to take on a teaching role. A secondary result of this instruction was the nurturing of artists whose painting techniques in the Luminist style reflected their earlier training as lithographers.
