Clarence Saunders Brigham

1877-1963

Clarence Brigham was a powerful force at the American Antiquarian Society for fifty years. Hired in 1908 as the Society's third librarian, he held that position until 1930, when he became the director until he retired in 1959. These were years in which the Society's holdings and resources expanded dramatically.  Brigham's work as an author and bibliographer is reflected in his articles, books, and essays. He is best known for his monumental bibliographic work, The History and Bibliography of American Newspapers 1690-1820.
